Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
