EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
